TEHRAN (IQNA) – The secretary general of the World Forum for Proximity of Islamic Schools of Thought (WFPIST) stressed the need for paying more attention to social interpretations of the Quran in order to pave the way for the new Islamic civilization.

Hojat-ol-Islam Hamid Shahriari

Hojat-ol-Islam Hamid Shahriari made the remark in an address to the second international conference on social interpretation of the Holy Quran, held at the University of Tehran on Wednesday.

He further referred to the issues of Ummah and Imamate in Islam and the Quran, and said that according to Islam, everything should be shaped within the concept of Ummah.

If we accept the concept of Ummah, then we need a guide and leader, which the Quran refers to as Imam and caliph, he stated.

The cleric noted that efforts should be made to see how these concepts can be reconciled with the idea of natation-state, which is a modern concept.

Creation of a union of Muslim countries can recreate the concept of Ummah and link it to nation-state, he added.

Hojat-ol-Islam Shahriari said he has discussed the objectives, policies and structures of such a union in a paper and tried to offer a new model for the political philosophy of the new Islamic civilization.

Mahmoud Vaezi, dean of the University of Tehran’s Faculty of Theology, was another speaker at the conference, who stressed that future belongs to spirituality and culture.

Iran’s Quranic and Islamic Cultural Studies Society organized the international event at the University of Tehran.

Quranic teachings and the issue of governance, social interpretation of Quran in Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei’s works, social interpretation of Quran in Imam Khomeini’s works, unity of Islamic Ummah and challenges ahead, future of Muslim world in light of Quranic teachings, and women and social responsibility were among the issues discussed at the scholarly event.
